I’m an independent crop consultant in Deer Park, WI. I work for the farmer who hires me — not a seed company, a chemical supplier, or an equipment dealer. Nobody pays me to move product, so nothing I recommend has a commission riding on it.

Most of what I do is on-farm research. If you’re weighing whether a fungicide pass pays on your corn, we leave check strips and weigh the difference at harvest — on your ground, in your year, not a plot two states away. Some years the answer is spend the money. Plenty of years it’s don’t.

The rest is the day-to-day: soil tests read straight, a fertility plan built for the field in front of us, and a scouting report that says what actually needs treating. You get the recommendation I’d make if the crop were mine.

What does an independent crop consultant do?
An independent crop consultant gives you agronomic advice with nothing to sell. I scout your fields, read soil tests, plan fertility and rotations, and call pest problems straight. You pay for the advice, so the advice is the product — not a bag of seed or a jug of chemical.
How is that different from a seed or chemical dealer’s agronomist?
A dealer’s agronomist is paid — directly or through sales quotas — when you buy what they sell. I’m not. I carry no product line and earn nothing on your inputs, so when the right call is a cheaper rate, a different product, or skipping a pass entirely, that’s the call you get from me.
What is a Certified Crop Adviser (CCA)?
The CCA is a credential from the American Society of Agronomy. Earning it means passing rigorous exams; keeping it means continuing education every year and holding to a code of ethics. It’s the professional standard behind my recommendations — evidence they rest on agronomy, not on making a sale.
